Wi-Fi enabled iPods

If you think iPod is the coolest thing that you ever hand, well, you are right. But that's not all. Apple is looking at the possibility of introducing wi-fi enabled iPods in the near future.

Piper Jaffray's Gene Munster has this to say:

With the iPod user base as its foundation, Apple is establishing a Wi-Fi mobile platform that we believe will spark continued growth in the iPod segment

Apple's Chief Finance Officer Peter Oppenheimer confessed that iPod sales had been less than spectacular. The company registered only 5 percent growth in overall unit sales, the slowest year-over-year rate in the product's history.

This had pundits, analysts and shareholders nervous given that the device has historically been seen as a prime indicator of Apple's overall health. But as others were quick to point out, while iPod sales slowed down, iPod revenue for the quarter actually did quite well, growing 17 percent over the year-ago quarter.

Most agreed this meant that more and more people were opting for the more expensive iPod models like the touch instead of the nano and shuffle.

During the earnings call, executives even recast the iPod touch as potentially "the first mainstream Wi-Fi mobile platform, running all kinds of mobile applications," marking the first time Apple has labeled the touch as anything more than a high end iPod.

Wireless Ipod To Be Released Soon

PortalPlayer, the company which produces audio components for the Apple iPod, is about to unveil its wireless and Bluetooth chipsets, which suggests Apple may soon release a wireless iPod.

According to website Reg Hardware, PortalPlayer said it will integrate its PP5022 audio chip family with UK company CSR's UniFi Wi-Fi and Bluetooth controller. Reg Hardware says the companies will demonstrate a reference platform based on the combined technology next week at the 3GSM show in Barcelona.

Incorporating Blutooth and WiFi into an iPod would enable users to use Bluetooth headsets, browse music on a host computer, and even download new music from iTunes at hotspots.

Last week, a supposed invite to an Apple event in late February circulated on the internet, and some have speculated that if the event occurs it may be as a springboard to wireless-capable iPods.However, this may be premature, as Reg Hardware reports PortalPlayer and CSR's technology wouldn't be available until the second half of the year.

iPods not playing iTune Movies

A number of iPod owners have discovered that their recently purchased iPods won't work with Apple's new iTunes video rentals, even though the iPods have video playback capabilities.

Some analysts, like Forrester's James McQuivey, say the issue could be related to digital rights management or a planned obsolescence strategy -- encouraging people to buy the most current generation iPods.

For now, the most likely suspect has to do with what some have deemed the "analog hole" present in 5-G iPods. Previous generation iPods have an analog video output that works with standard video cables. As some have observed, this theoretically makes it easier to copy rented movies, by plugging the iPod into a camcorder or other video-recording device.

Metasploit 3.1, Jailbreak 1.1.3 Released for Iphone

Metasploit version 3.1 has recently been released and believe it or not it comes with a support for breaking into Apple’s iPhone devices. It’s as if Jailbreak is not enough, now Metasploit is making it easy for everyone to hack his iPhone.

But what’s the point of breaking into our iPhone? That questions still remains unanswered for me as more and more hackers now turn their eyes on the iPhone to exploit.

As i’ve said over and over again, I’d rather keep my iPhone as it is. Installing third party applications could be exiting (for those who love to tinker on their gadgets) but we don’t know what other programs are hidden in the applications.

If it ain’t broken, don’t break into it.
